l.1. George WORTLEY, ged.19/10/1851

l.1.  George, geb. Leeds,  ged. 19/10/1851, Mexborough, Yorkshire, Engeland,  begr. 20/02/1929 x  06/1873, Sheffield, Yorkshire, Engeland met Emily COWLISHAW, geb. 01/1853. Sheffield, York, begr. 11/05/1916, d.v.

(Wikipedia)

This Lancashire habitation name of Kilshaw was from a place Cowlishaw, near Oldham in Lancashire. The place-name is recorded as Cowleshagh in 1422, and Colleshawe in 1558. The name is probably from the Old English words of 'colly' (dark, coal) and 'shaw' (copse) literally meaning one who lived and probably worked at the copse containing coal. Later instances of the name include Geoffrey Culcheth of Hindley who was recorded in 1585, and was listed in the Wills at Chester, and William Colishaw who appears in record in Derbyshire in the year 1680. Sarah Cowlishaw was documented in Lancashire in the year 1704. The name is also spelt Cowlishaw, Coleyshaw, Collishaw, and Culshaw.  Both the associated coat of arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.  (4crests.com) The family’s origins are in Lancashire to the west of Yorkshire, England. They probably expanded to Derbyshire just to the south of Sheffield in Yorkshire, England, before later expanding into Yorkshire. (Gen Forum)

Slagters se vroue verskyn soms as Butcher’s wife of Butcheress.  The British butcher  (https://janeaustensworld.wordpress.com/tag/19th-century-butchers/)

Once qualified, they would then be called Journeyman Butcher, and would be able to practise anywhere.

Ecclesall Bierlow encompassed most of the land between the River Sheaf and the Porter Brook from The Moor to Ringinglow.  It also included the areas of Broomhall and Crookesmoor to the north of Porter Brook. Though this area contained numerous small villages and hamlets, there was never a village called Ecclesall.  (Wikipedia)
