The major industry in Bedlington during the 18th and 19th century was the production of iron.  By the end of the 19th century Bedlington was becoming notable as a coalfield village. The influential and powerful 'Bedlington Coal Company' was founded in 1838, producing their first coal in 1841. By 1909, there were as many as ten collieries producing coal in the area.  (http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/Bedlington.htm)

The Bedlington Coal. Co., owned five collieries, Bedlington Dr. Pit, Bedlington “A” Pit, West Sleekburn Bomarsund and Barrington.  Barrington Colliery had not undergone a very substantial change in the development of the industry, nor had the number of men who were employed there – over 200  nor the daily output  between 500 and 600 tons, represented any considerable difference when compared with it’s early history.  In 1868 the old pit head was pulled down to be rebuilt and this was one of the first iron heap-stead’s to be introduced to Northumberland, the change over necessitating the laying up of the colliery for 18 months.  Many of the old houses, those in Wood Row, built of wood, were pulled down to make way for newer and more substantial property, but apart from the erection of two rows of houses, building progress had not been the same as in other parts of Bedlingtonshire. Met die 1891 census het hulle in Front Row, Bedlington, Sleek Burn Colliery.  Die gesin het nog twee kinders (Elizabeth en John) ryker geraak.

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Sleekburn like this:  Sleekburn (East and West), two townships in Bedlington parish, Northumberland; 3¼ miles N W of Blyth. Pop., 72 and 225.  (http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/25272)

Though the Sleekburn pit is the oldest and smallest of the company’s mines employing only 140 hewers.  The first row of houses to the west of the station is one of the often described single rows of two-roomed or rather one room and a garret cottages, without either ashpits or privies and though this row faces the public road to Bedlington, the ashes and other house refuse are simply brought out and throuwn down in heaps at a short distance from the doors.  This has also one of the old school of village ovens standing in the centre.  Higher up the road we come upon a double row of houses, also without rivies or ashpits.  (http://www.sixtownships.org.uk/our-colliery-villages-sleekburn-1873.html)
