On 24th Feb., 1648-9, Roger Betteridge and Sarah his wife — she beins: a sister of Sir Francis Wortley — petitioned to compound for Carlton, on the plea that Sir Francis did in 1625 agree to pay his sister 2000, when she attained the age of 12; and more, when she was 21; and that being unable to do this, he did sell to her the manor of Carlton, of which she did then ask for possession as being in destitute circumstances. Brettridge, of St. Martin's in the Fields, Esq. (also described as of Newhall,
co. York), stating her right to the manor of Carleton, the manor-house or
capital messuage called St. Ellenwell there, (tc, which had been settled upon
her in lieu of 1,000/. in money, plate and jewels, at the age of 21 years, or
