On 24th Feb., 1648-9, Roger Betteridge and Sarah his wife — she beins: a sister of Sir Francis Wortley — petitioned to compound for Carlton, on the plea that Sir Francis did in 1625 agree to pay his sister 2000, when she attained the age of 12; and more, when she was 21;  and that being unable to do this, he did sell to her the manor of Carlton, of which she did then ask for possession as being in destitute circumstances.
