During World War I he made several visits to the front, and Mary (sy vrou) visited wounded serviceman in hospital.  In 1917 with anti-German sentiment running high, he changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (popularly known as Brunswick or Hanover) to Windsor.  (Royal family history)

Joseph Edwin Beresford was in Desember 1842 in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, Engeland gebore en op 09/01/1853 gedoop.  In 1851 het hy in Newcastle under Lyme gewoon. Mary se broers en susters is:  Joseph Beresford geb. c. 1866, Maryhill, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland;  Samuel Berisford, geb. c. 1868, Wolstanton, Staffordshire, Engeland;  Elizabeth Jane Berisford, geb. Des 1870, Wolstanton, Staffordshire, England;  Frederick Beresford, geb. Mar 1873, Wolstanton, Staffordshire, Engeland;  James Beresford, geb. c. 1882 in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, Engeland;  Alice Beresford, geb. Mar 1884, Wolstanton, Staffordshire, Engeland, oorl. The town stands on the coast, at the termini of railways from Liverpool, Preston, and Manchester, 18½ miles N by W of Liverpool; was, in the early years of the present century, a poor hamlet, called South Hawes; came into notice, about 1830, as an attractive watering-place;  grew rapidly, from that time, into a handsome town, with spacious streets and promenades; occupies a quondam sandy waste, absorbent of moisture, and now well embellished. Daar is twee koerante, ‘n Hoof poskantoor, 'n a.r. station with Telegraph, sewentien hotelle, 'n pier, baths, 'n uitgebreide swemstrand, 'n park van 30 hektaar, 'n goed geboude markhuis, 'n vismark, 'n stadsaal, drie kerke, en elf dissenting chapels. (Genuki - John Marius Wilson, Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870-72)

The precise chronology of the uniforms issued following electrification is currently unclear, though it is likely that the initial issues were double-breasted, with two rows of four buttons - the fourth set initially worn on the lower lapels, but later on moved to a more conventional position - and with three pockets at waist level. The lapels probably carried insignia of some description, though on later jackets they were definitely unadorned, i.e. they were completely devoid of insignia. (http://www.tramwaybadgesandbuttons.com/page148/page152/page184/page184.html)

Caps were in the kepi style with a stiff glossy peak, and carried a large brass cap badge comprising the municipal shield and motto within a wreath, below which was a ribbon containing the words 'CORPN TRAMWAYS' . The kepi style caps were replaced with more modern upright military style caps some time around the time of the Great War, though precisely when is unclear.  Southport, in common with many UK tram operators, employed women during the Great War to replace male staff lost to the armed services. These ladies - seemingly referred to as either 'Lady Guards' or 'Conductorettes' in Southport - were issued with single-breasted jackets with a row of five buttons, four pockets, lapels and epaulettes (with button closures); neither lapels nor epaulettes appear to have carried any insgnia. A long matching skirt was also issued. Headgear comprised a baggy cap with a glossy peak, which bore the same municipal cap badge as male employees' caps.  Southport Corporation Tramways cap badge - brass.  Author's collection.

‘Olde England’ were common in the Federation period right up until the end of the First World War.  The Old English style tended to draw on Tudor and other similar English styles.  The most distinctive feature of this style is the black and white half timbering based on Elizabethan cottage work.  Textured red or ‘tapestry’ multi-coloured brickwork.  Dark-stained half timbering laid over brickwork or rough casting.  Gothic or Tudor styles sandstone trims to major doors and windows.  Centred or flattened ‘Tudor’ arches.  Steeply pitched terracotta tiled roofs.  Oriel windows.  Diamond pane leadlight windows with heraldic motifs in stained glass.  Heavy paneled entrance doors with decorative hardware.  Diagonal shaped chimney stacks with multiple ribs and elaborate stepped tops.
