According
to Voortrekkerstamouers pg. 33
accompanied Trek with his uncle L J Nel in November 1837, probably departing
from Koonap, Albany. Like so many
Trekkers, the couple drew up their joint will prior to departure in 1836: (Anita Campbell)
which
indeed confirms that they were resident in Albany. What is telling for me is
that Christina lists her parents as ‘unknown’. This hints at some family
conflict (Anita Campbell).

These are handwritten in Dutch
with coloured illustrations and Bible verses, usually listing two children per
page, but more elaborately one child per page in the Lotter register. I am surmising that copies of entries into
the original family Bible were made following the death of their mother, which
by tradition would have passed to the eldest son, hence explaining the
booklet-type document we have. Stephanus
Nel’s last son Stephanus was born in February 1886 (and obviously some decision
was made that this WOULD be their last child; his elder brother continued having
